About The Speaker
Guy CARON
Mayor of Rimouski (Quebec)
Guy Caron became the 34th mayor of Rimouski on November 7, 2021. After a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Ottawa, he entered student politics and became president of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), a position he held from 1994 to 1996. He completed a Master’s degree in Economics at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in 2001. After a short stay in Toronto, he returned to Ottawa to work as a media relations officer and eventually as an economist with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP) before being elected as a Member of Parliament in 2011. During his eight years as an MP, he held the key positions of Finance and Foreign Affairs Critic, among others, before entering his party’s leadership race in 2017 and serving as Parliamentary Leader from October 2017 to February 2019. His accomplishments as an MP include the introduction of a bill facilitating the family transfer of small and medium-sized businesses and small farms, which ensures that family transfer will no longer be taxed more than a sale to a foreigner as was previously the case. His work also paved the way for the handover of the Rimouski marina in 2018 and the extension of the breakwater. Defeated in the 2019 elections, he then served as executive director of the organization Héritage Bas-Saint-Laurent and acted as a lecturer at the University of Quebec in Rimouski (UQAR).
